Understanding the future of commercial electric vehicles in North America just became easier. In a landmark report, ACT Research has outlined the forecast of adoption of more than 20 vehicle applications over the next 20 years.

As part of the second edition of CHARGING FORWARD, a battery and fuel cell commercial electric vehicle report, ACT Research analyzed and built economic-based, total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) algorithms to plot the baseline, slow-case, and fast-case scenarios for adoption of 23 work applications of Classes 4–8 vehicles across North America.

“As part of ACT Research’s Global CEV2021 study POWER UP, we had the chance to include a number of study participants focused on the North American market. The result was additional insights into cost assumptions, enabling further improvements to our TCO models and refinements to our adoption rate forecasts for a stand-alone CHARGING FORWARD Update,” noted Ann Rundle, VP Electrification and Autonomy.

The more than 250-page analysis takes a deep dive into the current and future challenges and opportunities across battery and fuel cell technology, propulsion systems, infrastructure, regulations and subsidies. What’s more, ACT was able to quantify this analysis into a TCO model, allowing OEMs, suppliers, infrastructure suppliers, fleets, and others to understand the tangible impact of these potentially intangible matters.

“We’ve really spent a considerable amount of time looking at the regulatory landscape to understand how policies and regulations will impact BEV and FCEV adoption. Everything from ZEV mandates and NOx emissions regulations to relaxing weight penalties and local air quality rules. Regulatory impacts are built into our TCO model, and we’ve made it easy for our clients to factor in their own subsidies and incentives,” remarked Lydia Vieth, ACT’s Research Analyst, Electrification & Autonomy. “This means ACT is able to give our clients not only BEV and FCEV adoption rates for 23 work applications of Classes 4–8 vehicles, but a complete understanding of the factors and circumstances driving those adoption rates in North America.”
